The Benalmádena Buddhist stupa
The Benalmádena Buddhist stupa is a Tibetan stupa (Buddhism developed in the Himalayas), it is the largest in Europe.
It was inaugurated in October 2003, and symbolizes the enlightenment of the Buddha, the realization of nature in the mind. For this reason it is known as The Stupa of Enlightenment.
It has a meditation room inside and hosted the meeting of the European Buddhist Union in April 2018. Stupas are usually closed buildings (without entrances) around which Buddhists meditate as if facing Buddha
But the Buddhist Stupa of Benalmádena, unlike most Stupas in the world, has an interior room that can be visited for meditation. Different Buddhist exhibitions are also held there.
And why in Benalmádena? Because it is a strategic point in the Mediterranean and a meeting point for civilizations, cultures and religions.
It represents peace, prosperity and harmony, while serving as a place of meditation.
Its dimensions and privileged location offer excellent views of the area, being one of the great tourist attractions of the town.
From the ceiling of the meditation hall to its highest point, the Stupa is completely filled with sacred objects. Its treasurers, sealed forever, contain among others:
At the top it is crowned by a golden cone. This cone can be seen from the entire coastline between Benalmádena and Fuengirola.
How to get to the Benalmádena Buddhist Stupa?
With the intercity bus. We have several lines:

- 6000 clay images made by two western Rinpoche students, representing six different buddhic aspects
- Half a ton of Buddhist prayers printed on cotton paper.
- The complete teachings of the Buddha Shakyamuni or Kanjur (108 volumes) and the complete explanations of these teachings or Tenjur.
- The Tree of Life, a tree 17 meters high, specially worked for this purpose, and located vertically in the center of the Stupa.
- Countless objects and sacred relics brought from powerful Buddhist places in the Himalayas.
- The most precious relic in the Stupa is a relic of the Kashyapa Buddha, the pre-Shakyamuni Buddha.
- A small Tsa Tsa (clay statue) made by Milarepa, the most famous Tibetan yogi of all time (11th century AD).
